Do Blogs Create Enemies?

Do you ever get in trouble for writing what you write? Does your family call you on the phone to yell? Do your friends ever tell you they will stop talking to you because of something you wrote?

    Almost every post I write, someone tells me to take it down. Not kidding. In general, I have found that people who are mentioned in a post have the uncanny ability to misread a post in fifty different ways and then stress about all of them. People give very little consideration to a blog post until they are in it — then they think the whole world revolves around the blog post.

    I have lost one friend from a blog post. Family members no longer ask me to take down the posts. They just brace themselves each day the feed arrives. Do you read David Sedaris? I read that at Christmas he gave everyone in his family a present along with a letter from his
    publisher that he needed family members to sign that said they wouldn’t sue the publisher. I always imagine that if I were Christian, that’s how my Christmas would be.
