My Son Needs Help

I heard you on NPR about a week ago and I think you could help my son.

He needs to talk to someone with the common sense you have about career planning. He graduated Brown and has worked in [entertainment companies]. He had great ideas but by the time the upper echelons could decide on his ideas– some other faster minds in smaller, less corporate settings got there first.

Can you suggest a coach in the Los Angeles who has the same ideas as you who can talk some sense to him before he decides to go back to school for a masters in business? I think that he really just needs to find his niche. He is creative and very personable. He is now 30. His last job was six figures but that corporate world is not for him.

Thank you for your help.

Your son will not get into a good business school at age 30, so it’s a moot point. Thirty is too old to go to business school. The degree won’t get you anything at that point in your career. Here’s a post I wrote about that:

So only a second-tier school will accept him, and those schools do not have a track record for making people more employable. He will just have a huge debt. You can forward this email to him.

But before you do that, I want to tell you something else: Your son is 30. He went to Bown and he worked for [top entertainment companies]. So he knows a bit about navigating the world. Why don’t you concentrate on your own life and let your son live his life?

Maybe you don’t like the choices he’s making, but he’s 30 years old. It’s disrespectful of you to think you’d make better decisions for his life than he would. Your his mom. Show him love and respect. Save all the judgment for someone else.
