I Hate My Brand New Job
I worked at a company for about 3 years, which was fine through the recession, but a new manager came on board with whom I fought constantly. Yelling and screaming matches were the norm.
Fed up, I quit and recently accepted a new gig. Now, just a month in, I hate it. It’s not for me, it’s a big company and has extensive travel requirements and other tasks that I don’t even want to deal with.
So, problem is that now I’m job hunting again – but with weight of not being able to get good recommendation from last employer and the new one is only a month in, not an easy story to spin.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this?
It’s not that big a problem. You do not need references from your current job to get a job. People understand. But you do need to be able to talk about yourself and your career in a positive light. So you just need to spin this in a good light in order to get the next job, and then leave this job off your resume — people will assume you were out of work job hunting and it won’t matter.
For now, you need to figure out how to make yourself look like the current situation is not a disaster in that you are still performing well. To accomplish this, you probably need to get an hour or two of career coaching to figure out how to talk about the situation in an interview and frame it on your resume.
But you’ll be fine – you’re right in that this happens all the time.
