I have a short background in tech support but have spent the last few years as a graphic designer. How do I write a technical resume with a 3 year gap in tech work? Should I include the graphic design stuff on that resume?

If you have only been working a short period of time, it’s okay to have various types of work on your resume. It looks fine to say that you starting out in technical writing, and you tried graphic design, but you realize now that you like technical writing. Or whatever. This works well for any field.
At the beginning of your career, what matters is that you do a good job wherever you go. You don’t need to show that you have clear direction and specialty until that 7-10 year point.
So make sure your resume shows that you were a strong performer at each of your jobs, and someone will let you go back into a more technical job.
